Akron, Pa. (MCC) — Josef Nordenhaug, general secretary of the Baptist World Alliance, died Thursday, Sept. 18, in Washington, D. C. He had been confined to his home in Washington for two weeks with a heart ailment. Stricken with a coronary failure, he died en route to the hospital.
Nordenhaug worked with the Mennonite Central Committee in common concerns for the Mennonites and Baptists in the Soviet Union. In a letter of some months ago, he wrote, "The discovery of our common interest in Anabaptist history was a joyous experience for me."
Nordenhaaug headed the joint Baptist-Mennonite delegation to the Soviet Union in the fall of 1966. William T. Snyder, executive secretary of MCC, and Frank C. Peters and David P. Neufeld both of Canada, were Mennonite delegates.
The Baptist World Alliance is composed of 85 conventions and unions in 70 countries and includes about 27 million of the world's 30 million Baptists. Headquarters office is in Washington.
