Killed When Plane Crashes In River

LEADER IN LEBANON, OREGON COMMUNITY DIES, SON INJURED

Archbold, Ohio. — Relatives of this community were called to Lebanon, Oregon last week to attend funeral services for Dan Nofziger, 61, who was killed instantly Sept. 16 when the airplane piloted by his son Morris crashed into the Umpqua river east of Reedsport, Oregon.

Word received here indicated that the son suffered compound fractures of both legs and other injuries, and was in serious condition. He was pulled from the river by a fisherman in an outboard motorboat who saw the plane dive steeply, strike a power line and crash into the river. The badly wrecked plane with the body of the father was pulled from 25 feet of water.

It was reported here that the father and son were returning home after a visit at Pomona, Calif., and were accompanied as far as San Francisco by the elder Mr. Nofziger’s brother, Alvin Nofziger and wife. Dan Nofziger was a leader in the Lebanon community and active in the (Old) Mennonite church.
