MRS. KATIE NIKKEL
Mrs. Katie Nikkel was born June 11, 1882 at Medora, Kan., the daughter of Frank and Aganetha (Warkentin) Nickel. She spent her early childhood days in that community.
At the age of eight she lost her mother through death, leaving her and two brothers motherless. After some time a loving mother, Karolina (Duerksen) Nickel, filled that place in the home. Later she moved with her parents to Gotebo, Okla. where she faithfully stood by her parents during the pioneer days. In 1910 they moved to the Corn, Okla. community.
Mother was saved at the age of 15. On Sept. 5, 1895 she was baptized by Rev. Abraham Schellenberg and received into the Mennonite Brethren church, whose faithful member she remained until her departure.
On July 25, 1912 she entered holy matrimony with Peter P. Nikkel. The Lord blessed this union with one daughter and four sons, and 29 years of blissful married life. Most of the years were spent in the Corn community. Mother experienced many hardships including the passing of father in 1941. In all her trials and cares she proved to be a faithful and understanding mother and no sacrifice was too great for her. She served to the best of her ability in the home and community. She found great delight in the word. Psalms 23, 100 and 121 were her favorite Scriptures.
Mother enjoyed good health until recent years. Several months ago severe ailments developed. Specialized help was administered which gave some relief, but soon her condition became more critical. She spent the last severe weeks in the Clinton Nursing Home. It pleased the Lord to relieve her from her suffering on March 20, 1960. Sh [sic] reached the age of 77 years, nine months and nine days.
Her brother Frank of Topeka, Kan., and sister Carrie Ewert of Mt. Lake, Minn. preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her departure her children, Susie Mae Nikkel and fiance Gerhard Goerzen, Ernest and Mollie Nikkel of Chickasha, Okla., Ervin and Lorene Nikkel of Herington, Kansas, Frank and Dorothy Nikkel of Clinton, Okla., Pete and Winona Nikkel of Fresno, Calif.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Schmidt of Corn, Okla. and Mrs. John H. Reimer of Buhler, Kansas; three brothers, John F. Nickel of Chickasha, Okla., Dave D. Nickel of Mountain Lake, Minn., and Henry H. Nickel of Corn, Okla., and a host of relatives and friends.
