Carpenter Died Of Heart Attack

Halstead, Kan. — Funeral services were held at the Grace Mennonite Church near here Dec. 11 for Abe J. Nightengale [sic Nightingale], 67, who died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday, Dec. 6, while working on a new house in South Hutchinson.

For the past 14 years Mr. Nightengale [sic Nightingale] had lived in Hutchinson, where he was employed as a carpenter. He was born in McPherson County June 12,1888.

He leaves his wife, Ella, of the home, six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as three sisters.

ABE J. NIGHTINGALE

Abe J. Nightingale, son of Jake and Eva Nightingale, was born June 12, 1888, in McPherson County, Kansas, and quietly passed away on Dec. 6, 1955, at 3:30 p.m. after suffering a heart seizure while working on a new house in South Hutchinson. He reached the age of 67 years, five months and 24 days.

His parents passed away at Pauls Valley, Okla. when he was a young boy. He then made his home with his older brothers and sisters. He was joined in marriage to Ella B. Schmidt on July 4, 1908, at Anadarko, Okla. To this union were born nine children, of whom three passed away in infancy.

They have lived in four states, including five years at Verdon, Okla., and 12 years in Kiowa County, Greensburg, Kansas. For 14 years they lived on a farm near LaMar, Colo. and three years in Missouri. In 1942 they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas which was their home at the time of his death.

He enjoyed good health until a year and a half ago, when heart-complications set in. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a good neighbor. His kind disposition won him many friends.

He leaves his deeply bereaved wife, Ella; four daughters; Viola, Mrs. Omar Liebman of Hutchinson, Alma, Mrs. Jacob Boese of Hutchinson, Erma, Mrs. Glen Gregory of Santa Ana, Calif. and Pearl, Mrs. Paul Landon, also of Hutchinson; two sons; Clarence of Gustine, Calif. and Walter, of Los Banos, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Andre Unruh of Galva, Mrs. Katie Thomas of Chickasha, Okla., and Mrs. Eva Boese of Oklahoma City, and many other relatives and friends.

Two sons, one daughter, his parents and four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 11, 1955, at 2:30 o'clock in the Grace Mennonite Church west of Halstead. A short prayer service in his home preceded the church service. Rev. Lincoln Jantz of Greensburg and Rev. Carl Dirks, the pastor of the Grace Mennonite Church, were the officiating ministers. The church choir sang favorite church hymns.
