• Mrs. Sara Nickel, 88, lifelong resident of the Hillsboro community, died Feb. 13 at Salem Hospital here. She had suffered a stroke of paralysis in March of last year. the funeral was conducted Saturday afternoon at the Trinity Mennonite Church, with Rev. Victor Sawatzky officiating. Mrs. Nickel was the widow of H. J. Nickel, who died in 1928. Survivors include four children, Elizabeth of Hillsboro, Rudolf of Peabody, Wilma of Emporia, and Ida Mae of Wichita; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. F. N. Funk.

Mrs. H. J. (Sara) Nickel, daughter of Rev. Jacob W. and Anna Funk Penner, was born Jan. 14, 1880, in the Brudertal community near Hillsboro, Kan. She received most of her elementary schooling at Brudertal School but also attended several months at Lighthouse School where Rev. H. D. Penner was the teacher.

On May 25, 1896, mother was baptized by the elder Rev. Wm. J. Ewer and became a member of the Brudertal Mennonite Church, where she was a faithful member and continued so when Bruderthal and Johannestal merged as Trinity Mennonite church. Her main church activity centered in the work of the Naehverein and later the mission society. She sewed many a garment, tied and bound comforters, knitted bandages, and contributed freely to offerings.

On Oct. 30,1901, she was married to Heinrich J. Nickel by the younger Rev. Wm. J. Ewert, and they established their home on the farm where Grandfather Johann Nickel had located in the 1870's. Here they welcomed many missionaries home on furlough. Here they celebrated their silver wedding in 1926. Father died two years later, on Nov. 2, 1928. In 1944 she established her residence in Hillsboro. It was particularly hard for her to see the farm home and the church become property of the Marion Reservoir a few years ago.

On March 15, 1967, mother sufferd [''sic''] a stroke and became paralyzed. She was hospitalized from March 17 to June 1, when she had recovered sufficiently to be cared for at home. On Jan. 26, 1968, she reentered Salem Hospital where she died Feb. 13 at the age of 88 years and one month.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. F. N. Funk, four children, Elizabeth of Hillsboro, Rudolf and wife Lillian, Peabody, Wilma of Emporia, and Ida Nae, Wichita, five grandchildren and their spouses, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at the Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. Rev. Victor Sawatzky officiating. The sermon was based on II Cor. 5:1-10, particularly Verse 8. Burial was made in the Haven of Rest Cemetery.
