Newton and Vicinity

● An accident at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church east of Newton late Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of Louis Nickel of Whitewater. Mr. Nickel and a number of other men of the church were engaged in re-shingling the church roof, which had been damaged in the May storm, when a scaffolding gave way. He and several companions fell, and although the fall did not appear to be serious, he apparently was struck on the head, inflicting a basal skill fracture. He died Tuesday evening in the Bethel Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Betty, of the home near Whitewater; three daughters, Mrs. Gaylord (Iva Jean) Maples of Topeka, Mrs. Gary (Judith) Nickel, residing in California, and Mrs. Allen (Edith) Zuercher of Newton; one son, Roger, also in California; his mother, Mrs. P. P. Nickel of rural Newton; and two sisters, Mrs. Ted (Leona) Unruh of Walton and Mrs. Harold Leah) Borschordt of rural Newton.
