• Mrs. Susie L. Nickel, 83, of Route 3, Newton, died Dec. 23 at the Bethesda Hospital in Goessel. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Grace Hill Church east of Newton, of which she was a long-time member. Mrs. Nickel, the former Susie Schmidt, was a lifelong resident of Harvey County and the widow of Peter P. Nickel, who died in 1940. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ted Unruh of Walton and Mrs. Harold Borchard of Route 3, three sisters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

SUSANNA L. NICKEL
Susanna L. (Schmidt) Nickel, daughter of Andrew J. and Petronela (Nickel) Schmidt, was born Feb. 8, 1881, in Pleasant Township, Harvey County, Kan. She passed to her eternal reward on Dec. 23, 1964, at the Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, Kan., where she had received loving care since Septmber 1963. She reached the age of 83 years, ten months, and fifteen days.
Upon her confession of faith, she was baptized by Rev. Jacob R. Toews and received into the Grace Hill Mennonite Church on April 3, 1898. She loved her church and was anactive member as long as her health permitted.
On Nov. 13, 1902, she was united in holy matrimony to Peter P. Nickel in the Grace Hill church. They were life-long residents of Pleasant Township, moving in 1910 to their farm located seven and one-half miles east of Newton, where she continued to reside until she entered the hospital in 1963.
Preceding her in death were her husband on Nov. 10, 1940; a son, Louis on Sept. 25, 1962; and an infant daughter, Mollie, on Jan. 20, 1907.
Survivors include two duaghtrs [sic]: Leona E., Mrs. Ted Unruh, and husband of Walton, and Leah Rose, Mrs. Harold Borchardt, and husband of rural Newton; one daughter-in-law, Betty, Mrs. Louis Nickel of Ponce City, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Schmidt of Bethel Home for Aged, Newton, Mrs. Caroline Schmidt of Wichita, and Mrs. Gus Ewert of Whitewater; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Nickel was active until May 30, 1963, when she suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Bethel Deaconess Hospital where she spent three months. On Sept. 2, 1963, she was transferred to the Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, Kan. where she remained until the Lord called her home.
