Mary Nickel
Mary Nickel of Clearbrook, B.C. passed away Mar. 4. She was born Apr. 5, 1906 to Jacob P. and Suzanna Nickel near Langham, Sask. They moved to Dalmeny, Sask., where she attended elementary school. She appreciated the Christian upbringing at home and school. She received the Lord in 1921, was baptized and joined Ebenezer MB Church near Dalmeny, Sask. She took part in Sunday school, young people's and ladies' aid. At 19, she went to Winkler Bible School. In 1938 she became chief cook at Bethany Bible School for 3 years, then at Dalmeny Bible School for 4 years. She enjoyed this work, though the hours were long and the pay meagre. In 1947 the family moved to Clearbrook. She helped in Sunday school and joined a ladies' fellowship group at Clearbrook MB Church. She worked on her parents' strawberry farm. With brother John and sister Helen she was custodian of Mennonite Educational Institute and MB Bible Institute for 7 years. There were opportunities for domestic service as well. She and Helen cared for their parents. In April, 1987, lung cancer was diagnosed, and Helen cared for her. She wished to go to the place Jesus had prepared for her, testified of her faith in the Lord's salvation and rejoiced in the knowledge her sins were forgiven. Predeceased by brothers Peter in childhood and Jacob in 1988, she is survived by sisters Susie Martens of Swift Current, Sask., Helen of Clearbrook and Louise Schmidt of Clearbrook; and brother John of Clearbrook. The funeral was Mar. 8 in Clearbrook MB Church, with John E. Klassen, Elmer Martens and J.H. Quiring ministering.
