Large Funeral in Asuncion For Youth Killed in Fall

Asuncion, Paraguay. — Horst Neufeld, 17, son of Hans Neufeld of Asuncion, fell 30 yards to his instant death Oct. 23 when the edge of a steep incline on which he was standing suddenly gave way.

In the company of 49 other young people and under the leadership of Rev. Henry Dueck and youth leader Jakob Goerzen, Horst had gone on an outing to the beautiful Yaguaron mountain.

After a period of meditation on the mountain, Horst and four other youths separated themselves from the group and approached the edge of the incline. Just a few moments prior to the accident, Horst had warned one of his companions to be careful and not go too far.

A few minutes later Horst tried to kick a stone into the valley below. At that moment the ground under him gave way and he plunged into the abyss below.

As there are no roads in the area, it was difficult to approach the spot where Horst lay. It took eight minutes before he could be reached and by that time he had passed away.

About 500 persons attended his funeral in the Ascuncion Mennonite Church. Rev. Dueck and Missionary Franz brought messages in German and Jakob Goerzen spoke in Spanish.

Only a few weeks prior to their son's death, Mr. and Mrs. Neufeld flew to Goettingen, Germany, where Neufeld consulted Prof. Dr. Hallermann regarding an eye disease from which he has been suffering for some time. With the doctor's verdict that an operation is not possible now, and that his eyesight will probably diminish, the Neufelds returned home.

Neufeld is well known as the owner of a travel agency in Asuncion.
