— Funeral services for Mrs. William J. Nachtigal, 67, were held at the Buhler Mennonite church last Sunday afternoon, Rev, Henry Franzen in charge. Mrs. Nachtigal died at the Bethel Deaconess hospital here on Aug. 23. Mrs. Arthur (Helen) Kaiser and Mrs. John (Laura) Penner of Newton are among the six surviving children.

MRS. W. J. NACHTIGAL

Mrs. Susie Schmidt Nachtigal, daughter of Peter D. and Agnes Hiebert Schmidt was born March 20, 1884, at Marion, Kans. She died Aug. 23 at 12:45 p.m. in the Bethel Deaconess hospital, Newton.

On Sept. 6, 1902, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the Lord Jesus as her Savior, by Elder Bernhardt Buhler and received into the membership of the Hebron church. At the time of baptism Rev. Buhler gave her the following Scripture passage: Isaiah 43:2, “When thou passeth through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Some years later she joined the Buhler Mennonite church of which she remained a faithful member until the end of her life.

On May 4, 1905, she was married to W. J. Nachtigal who survives with the following children: Hilda and husband, Waldo V. Harms, Whitewater, Kans.; Eldo and wife, Ruby, Buhler, Kans.; Harlow and wife Dema, Elk City, Okla.; Helen and husband Arthur L. Kaiser, Newton, Kans.; Laura and husband John F. Penner, Newton, Kans.; Evelyn and husband, Roy E. Terry, Wichita, Kans.; Blanche, Mrs. Eric Penner, Mankato, Kans., wife of her eldest son, Arnold, who preceded her in death May 8, 1943.

She further leaves 15 grandchildren and also the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Agnes Martens, Buhler, Kans., Mrs. Cornelius Froese, Inman, Kans., Dan Schmidt, McPherson, Kans., Mrs. Cornelius Williams, Inman, Kans., Mrs. Henry L. Pauls, Inman, Kans., Nick Schmidt, Inman, Kans., and a host of relatives and friends.

Her lot in life was not easy. Many times she had to be hospitalized and many times she had to be cared for in the homes of her children when she was ill, whom she impressed with her uncomplaining spirit.

On May 5, 1951, unafraid she submitted to a major operation. Her faith in God and her eternal salvation never wavered. The operation prolonged her life for several months but her body was spread with cancer. On July 13 she re-entered the Bethel Deaconess hospital and remained there until the end.

Her cornation [sic] day has come. She has laid down her cross for a crown.
