— Funeral services for Abraham J. Nachtigal, 74, of the Halstead community were held Saturday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church of Halstead, Rev. Roland Goering in charge. He died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 9, at the farm home north of Halstead after suffering a heart attack. Surviving are his wife, Sarah; two sons, Harry of Burrton and Marvin of Denver; one daughter, Mrs. Herbert Fast of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and four brothers, George of Hutchinson, Pete of Haven, Henry of Halstead and Jake of Newton.

ABRAHAM J. NACHTIGAL

Abraham J. Nachtigal, son of Henry and Sarah (Janzen) Nachtigal, was born on March 6 1882 at Buhler, Kansas. He passed away at his home near Halstead, Kansas on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1957, at about 5:00 P.M. having reached the age of 74 years, 10 months and three days. The cause of death was a heart ailment from which he died very suddenly. A few weeks prior to his death he spent several days in the Halstead Hospital suffering from a similar ailment, but recovered sufficiently to enable him to return home.

Mr. Nachtigal received his education at the public elementary school and at the Bethel Academy. he spent a few years teaching school, but spent the major portion of his life in the vocation of farming which he loved very much. Even at the age of 74 he still enjoyed doing his field work.

On July 27, 1906, he was married to Sarah Dick by Rev. Bernhard Buhler. To this union four children were born, but one daughter preceded him in death at the age of four. After marriage he and his wife made their home near Inman, Kansas. Then for four years they lived at Syracuse, Kansas where he also taught school. The major portion of their married life, approximately forty years of it, was spent on a farm north of Halstead, Kansas where he lived at the time of his death. On July 27 of last year the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

On June 1, 1903, he was baptized by the Elder Dietrich Gaeddert and received into the membership of the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church near Inman, Kansas. Here he retained his membership until he transferred it to the Garden Township Mennonite Church after he had made his home on the farm north of Halstead only a few miles from this church. In February 1921 he transferred his his [sic] membership to the First Mennonite Church of Halstead where he remained a member until the time of his death. He took an active part in the church, serving as Sunday School teacher for several years.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two sons, Harry Nitengale [sic Nachtigal] of Burrton, and Marvin Nitengale [sic Nachtigal] of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Ruby, Mrs. Herbert Fast of Wichita; ten grandchildren, four brothers, George of Hutchinson, Pete of Haven, Henry of Halstead, and Jake of Newton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter and one grandson.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Mennonite Church of Halstead on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, at 2:00 o'clock. His pastor, Rev. Roland R. Goering, and Rev. H. T. Unruh of North Newton were the officiating ministers. Mrs. and Mrs. Harvey Vogt and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Krehbiel sang "Near To The Heart of God" and "Take Thou My Hand, O Father." Mrs. Milton Ewy was the accompanist. She also played a number of favorite hymns. He was laid to rest in the Hoffnungsau Cemetery near Buhler. Kaufman Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
