Noted Peace Leader Dies in New York

One of America's most militant and colorful peace leaders for more than a generation died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York on Feb. 11.

Rev. A. J. Muste, 82, had always said his one great ambition was to put an end to all war. He had only recently returned from Vietnam and was in the process of mobilizing some 100 different peace organizations for a nationwide demonstration against the war on April 15.

Born in The Netherlands, Muste came to the United States at the age of six and later became a Dutch Reformed minister. He also served in pastorates of Presbyterian, Congregational and Quaker congregations.
