ABRAM S. MOYER

Abram S. Moyer, son of William G. and Mary Swartley Moyer, was born November 7, 1866 in Springfield township. Bucks county, Pennsylvania. In 1871, at the age of five, his parents moved to the Swartley homestead near Chalfont, Pennsylvania, where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was baptized on confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on May 16, 1884, at Deep Run, by Bishop Moses Gottschall. On December 1, 1894, he married Susan Fretz, of Bedminster Township. They had one son, Alvin.

Bro. Moyer was a farmer all his life. Until one year ago he still helped his son and grandson, who now conduct the farm. For over 40 years he was a commission merchant in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

He was a devoted member of the Deep Run Mennonite congregation of the Eastern Conference for most of his life. From 1892 until 1910 he was a charter member of the Zion Mennonite congregation of Souderton. Though living at some distance from the meetinghouse, like his father before him, he and his family regularly attended meeting and were interested in congregational activities. He was a trustee at Deep Run for 21 years.

He served on the Chalfont Borough Council for over 40 years and was one of the original directors of the Chalfont National Bank.

Abram Moyer will be remembered as a man of integrity and clear conviction, devoted to his God and Church. We will miss his serious, rapt attention in meeting, and hearty humor in the home.

Though ailing for the last year, he kept a steady courage and attendance at meeting. On Thursday, Oct. 18, he passed into a coma. On Friday he responded to prayer and the reading of the Bible by a firm grasp of the hand. On Saturday, October 20, 1951, he fell asleep without a struggle in the presence of his son, He was almost 85 years of age.

Those who remain are his wife, Susan; his son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Ethel Moyer; two grandchildren, Alvin and Edith, and two younger brothers. William and Harvey.

The funeral was held on Thursday, October 25, at the Deep Run meetinghouse. Pastor J. Herbert Fretz preached on John 3:16, a favorite text of the deceased. The interment was at the Doylestown Cemetery.
