Widow Of Bluffton President Passed Away

MRS. S. K. MOSIMAN WAS PIONEER TEACHER AT CENTRAL COLLEGE

Bluffton, Ohio. — Mrs. Emilie Hamm Mosiman, widow of the former president of Bluffton College, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 15, at 6:30 in the Bluffton hospital. She had been confined to the hospital most of the time since she fell and broke her arm on Sept. 27.

Mrs. Mosiman was born in Marienburg, Germany, on Feb. 3, 1863. Marienburg is located in East Prussia not far from the city of Danzig. She attended the Hoehera Toechter Schule in Danzig and and [sic] later did additional work at the University of Chicago.

When she was a young lady her parents, moved to Beatrice, Neb. [sic duplicated phrase: Hamm, moved to Beatrice, Neb.] Her father started a lumber business. A year later both parents were asphyxiated by a defective stove.

Mrs. Mosiman was undecided for a time as to whether to remain in America or return to Germany. She made several trips back to Danzig to visit a grandmother before deciding to remain in this country. Mrs. Mosiman taught German in Beatrice high school between 1899 and 1909.

In 1908 the General Conference held its session in Beatrice. At that time Dr. S. K. Mosiman was attending and stayed at the home where Mrs. Mosiman was living with her brother, William Hamm. A year later Dr. S. K. Mosiman returned and they were married on August 12, 1909, at the home of Mrs. Mosiman’s sister, Mrs. William Penner, who lived near Beatrice.

Mrs. Mosiman came to Bluffton and taught German from 1909 until 1915. Dr. S. K. Mosiman was president of the Central Mennonite College from 1909 to 1914 and then became one of the organizers and first president of Bluffton College. He continued as president until 1936 when he was made president emeritus until his death on Jan. 24, 1940.

Mrs. Mosiman has always been a diligent worker and greatly devoted to the college. She was much in demand as a public speaker. She was a member of the First Mennonite church in Bluffton where she was active in the missionary society and taught the College Women’s Sunday School class for over thirty years.

Mrs. Mosiman had two brothers, William and Hans Hamm, and two sisters, Agatha Hamm and Mrs. William Penner, all of whom are now deceased. Her closest surviving relatives are two nieces and two nephews who live around Beatrice, Neb.

The funeral was held at the First Mennonite church in Bluffton at 2:30 on Thursday, Dec. 17. Rev. Alvin Beachy and Dr. L. L. Ramseyer officiated. The Bluffton College Vesper Choir sang “My God and I” and “Sanctus” during the service and a choral benediction “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Pall Bearers were H. W. Berky, A. C. Burcky, Ezra Moser, D. W. Bixler, John Klassen and J. S. Schultz. The body lay in state at the church from 1:30 to 2:30. Burial was in the Maple Grove cemetery.
