Missionary Builder Victim of Accident in Somalia, Africa
Kalona, Iowa. — A memorial service was held at the East Union Mennonite church here June 9 for V. David Miller, 61, who was instantly killed June 6 in Somalia, where he was serving as a missionary builder.
It is reported that he was traveling on a motor scooter when a herd of camels stampeded onto the road, his scooter colliding with one of the animals. Burial took place on Sunday morning, June 7, in Mogadiscio.
Since going to Somalia under the Eastern Board of Missions and Charities in 1958, Mr. Miller had supervised the construction of a hospital, schools, and missionary residences.
A native and former resident of McPherson County, Man. [sic Kan.], he came here in 1953, working as a cabinet maker and carpenter. His first and second wives both preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons, Doyle of Newton, Iowa, Curtis of Hutchinson, Kan., and Vernon of Riverside, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers.
