Nursing Instructor Died At La Junta

SERVICES HELD AT PROTECTION, KANSAS FOR NORA MAE MILLER

La Junta, Colo. — Miss Nora Mae Miller, R.N., who was associated with the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing for a quarter of a century, died here Jan. 27 after an illness of five years.

Funeral services at the La Junta Mennonite church Jan. 28 were in charge of Bishop Allen H. Erb of Lebanon, Oregon assisted by Wesley Jantz, the pastor. The body was sent to Protection, Kansas for final services and burial.

Born in Reno county, Kansas Dec. 17, 1898, Miss Miller entered nurses training here in 1919. She was a member of the fourth class to graduate from the La Junta nursing school. From 1925 until her retirement in 1950, she served successively as instructor of nursing students, director of the school of nursing and nursing service, and educational director. She was also graduate of Goshen College, Goshen, Ind.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the cause of Mennonite nursing education, the new nurses home here was named Miller Hall. A scholarship fund established in her honor is nearing the goal of $5,000.

She is survived by eight brothers and three sisters.

NORA MAE MILLER

Nora Mae Miller, daughter of Noah E. and Sophronia (Hummel) Miller, was born in Reno county, Kansas, Dec. 17, 1898, and passed away after several years of lingering illness at La Junta, Colorado. For some time she had been confined to the Mennonite hospital where she departed peacefully on Jan. 27, 1954. age 55 years, one month, ten days.

She lived with her parents in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. Her life from childhood to womanhood was always clean, conscientious, sympathetic and useful. She was always a willing and thorough worker in the home, school, church, and the institution where she served faithfully for a number of years.

Nora finished the academy and two years of college at Hesston College and Bible school. In 1939 she received the Bachelor's Degree at Goshen college. In 1919 she took up nurses training at the Mennonite hospital, LaJunta, and finished that course in 1923. She spent one year in the children’s home in Kansas City, Kansas as nurse, then returned to the LaJunta hospital, serving as instructor of nursing students until 1937 when she had a two year leave of absence to complete her school work. After returning to the hospital she served for three years as director of nurses training. In 1943 she became educational director and served in that capacity until failing health caused her to retire in 1950.

In esteem of her efficient, untiring work and unselfishness the Mennonite Nurses Home at La Junta was named Miller Hall. A student scholarship fund was started in her honor. She was an active member and helped to carry on this work.

In the church at LaJunta she was helpful to her pastors, and, in any way she could, assisted in the work of the church.

Her parents and two brothers, Howard E. and Baldwin F. preceded her in death. Surviving are three sisters, Ursula (Mrs. S. Enos Miller of Protection, Kansas, Miss Mary Miller of Hesston, Kansas, Christina (Mrs. Frank Garber of Alpha, Minn.; eight brothers, Elias A. Miller of LaJunta, Colo., Alf. B. Miller of Hutchinson, Kans., Lewis C. Miller of Manitou, Springs, Colo., David D. Miller of Berlin, Ohio, Noah T. Miller of Pryor, Okla., Billie D. Miller of Protection, Kansas, Levi A. Miller of Strasburg, Colo., and Harold R. Miller of Pryor, Okla. A large number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends also mourn her passing.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Mennonite church, LaJunta, on Jan. 28 by her former pastor, Allen H. Erb of Lebanon, Oregon, and her last pastor, Wesley Jantz of LaJunta. The afternoon of Jan. 30 services were held in the Protection Mennonite church by Wesley Jantz, assisted by Milo Kauffman, Hesston, Kansas, a representative of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities and of Hesston College and Bible school. The body was interred in the Protection Mennonite cemetery.
