A CHRISTMAS DAY TRAGEDY
Belleville, Pa., Dec. 31. — The home of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Miller of Mattawana, was saddened on Christmas evening by the drowning of their nine year old son, George. The drowning accident occurred only a short distance \from the Miller home. George with several playmates were enjoying the afternoon's sunshine in playing along the Junata [sic Juniata] river bank when George accidently [sic] slipped and skidded down the bank into the river's icy waters. His playmates ran for help, but when Thomas Morrow, the first to arrive, came to the scene, no trace of the boy's body could be seen. Morrow summoned help and within a short time several boats were moving about over the river trying to locate the body. For more than an hour and a half they boated back and forth, and finally their efforts were rewarded by finding the lifeless body below the bridge, his clothing having caught on a jagged rock. The body was brought to shore, and D. B P. Steele called, who pronounced the boy dead.
The funeral services were held in the Mattawana Mennonite church on sabbath afternoon with interment in Fairview cemetery.
The boy is survived by his parents and five brothers and sisters. — Belleville Times.
