Young Quarry Worker Crushed in Machine

LANCASTER COUNTY YOUTH KILLED WHEN CAUGHT IN COG-WHEEL

Lancaster, Pa. — A large congregation attended funeral services at the East Petersburg Mennonite church for David N. Miller, 20, of Route 1, Manheim, who was killed Jan. 17 when crushed in a concrete block machine at the Binkley and Ober stone quarry.

The youth was working at one end of the machine and apparently reached underneath for some reason and his clothing caught in the sharp teeth of a cog-wheel. He called for help, but before fellow employees could stop the machine, his chest was crushed between the wheel and chain, and he was dead when extricated.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Esther Newcomer Miller, two sisters and six brothers, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Sadie B. Miller of the Oreville Mennonite home.

Young Miller had been employed at the quarry for about six months. He was active in church work, and only the day before his death had written a letter to fellow employees in behalf of their foreman, John Emick, who was ill. The letter, found at the plant the evening after the youth’s death, stated, in part:

"Let us who have claimed Christianity in reality, remember the promise of our trusted Redeemer, who has promised to hear the sincere prayers of sincere Christians."

"So let us for Johnny, pray that the Lord may have His will performed, through the hands of his doctor, asking and trusting through faith that his bodily infirmity might be healed without any remaining weaknesses, so as to be able to move and work freely in this life again, giving the Lord the honor and glory He asks us."
