Julio Cesar Mendez Montenegro, president of Guatemala, declared a state of siege and called for three days of national mourning in the death of U. S. Ambassador John Gordon Mein, who was machine-gunned to death by a group of Guatemalan extremists.
Mein was in his car on the way to his office when he was ambushed.
His body was flown to the United States for burial.
