DR. MAYO, FAMOUS PHYSICIAN CALLED AWAY IN DEATH
Messages of condolence from all over the world poured into Rochester, Minn., this week as the city prepared final rites for Dr. William J. Mayo, last of its two famous brothers.
The son of a country doctor who trained him to become one of the greatest surgeons of his time, he died in his sleep from a stomach ailment at the age of 78. His brother, Dr. Charles Mayo, with whom he founded and developed the Mayo clinic, died May 26 from pneumonia.
Funeral services were held at Foundation House, his home for many years before he gave it to the Mayo Foundation for use as a center for medical study.
The clinic will continue to be administered by a board of eight directors established several years ago under a perpetual medical foundation which the brothers founded.
