Father, Daughters Die in Indiana Crossing Accident

Goshen, Ind. — Triple funeral services were conducted Feb. 8 at the North Main Street Church in Nappanee for Roman U. Mast, 25, and daughters Robetta Jean, five, and LaJane Marie, three, all victims of a grade crossing accident near Millersburg.

The services were conducted by Rev. Irvin Nussbaum and Rev. Homer North.

It was snowing and wind was whipping snow across nearby fields as Mast and the two little girls were returning home on a county road Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5. The engineer of a New York Central passenger train reported after the crash that the station wagon carrying the three started to swerve just before impact, indicating that Mast may have seen the train at the last moment.

The vehicle was carried more than 200 feet and rolled into a ditch.

Mrs. Mast and one-year-old daughter had remained at home while the other three went to bring a sister and family, the Marvin Millers, to the Mast home for supper. However, because of road conditions, the Millers decided not to keep the appointment. Had they done so, there would have been nine persons in the station wagon.

Survivors in addition to the wife and daughter are Mr. Mast's parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Uriah Mast of rural Etna Green, three sisters and seven brothers. Mrs. Mast is the former Betty Ellen Yoder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan V. Yoder of Etna Green.
