JOHN L. MARTIN

John L. Martin was born to Abraham and Elizabeth (nee Stobbe) Martin on June 1, 1879, in an immigrant house near Henderson, Neb. At an early age his mother was left alone, and when he was 12 his mother passed away, leaving him an orphan. For this reason he acquired very little schooling.

When he was 14, while he and his brother were moving to Colorado, he remembered the admonitions and prayers of his mother and realized that he was a lost sinner, and sought and found peace. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in Christ by Elder David Dick and received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Brethren Church at Kirk, Colo. in 1893.

On Nov. 5, 1903 he was joined in holy wedlock with Sarah Wiens. Together they established their home on a farm near Hampton, Neb. where they lived four years. In 1907 they settled on a farm three and one-half miles southwest of Corn, Okla. Here they lived for 30 years.

In 1932 they experienced a sad accident through which they lost their 19-year-old son David, who was fatally burned in an explosion in the home,at which time father also sustained severe burns. After recovering from this he again enjoyed fairly good health. In 1937 they moved to a farm adjoining the town of Corn, Okla.

On March 25, 1946, it pleased the Lord to take home his wife Sarah. They shared 43 years of joy and many blessings. This union was blessed with 10 children, of whom three preceded them in death — Elizabeth at six months, Harold at two years, and David at 19.

On April 25, 1947, he was married to Mrs. Anna Huebert. This union lasted for nearly 14 years and was blessed with two children.

He was a member of the district school board, trustee of the local M. B. church, treasurer of the building committee for the Home for the Aged. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years.

In 1952 he underwent major surgery from which he never entirely recovered. In 1956 we left the farm and purchased a home in Corn, where he spent the last years of his life.

On March 22, 1961 he had the misfortune of falling in our home and receiving internal injuries which caused him to be hospitalized on March 29. On April 4, while under treatment he succumbed to a heart attack, going home to his eternal reward at 6 p. m., reaching the age of 81 years, 10 months, and four days.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife Anna; nine children (six daughters and three sons), Anna, Mrs. A. A. Schmidt of Corn, Okla., John H. of Corn, Kathryn, Mrs. B. L. Dyck of Ferndale, Wash., Helen, Mrs. P. E. Schmidt of Weatherford, Okla., Albert J. of Corn, Susie of Lincoln, Neb., Esther, Mrs. H.
