Pioneer Church Worker Died
Lancaster, Penna. — Isaac W Martin, 93, pioneer Sunday School teacher of the Lancaster county district, died recently at the Oreville Mennonite Home near here. He was one of the original group who helped establish Sunday schools in this area and served as a teacher for 60 years. For 44 years he was also a public school teacher.
Familiarly known as “Uncle Ike” by later generations of Martins around the county, he had devoted the last 19 years to tracing and compiling a record of every descendant of the Martin family to settle in Lancaster county. The work covers more than 1,500 hand-written pages and includes dates of approximately 7,500 members of nine generations. The family record is traced back to David Martin, who left the Rhine Valley of Germany early in the 18th century and settled on a farm in Mt. Joy township.
A member of the Weaverland Mennonite church, Isaac Martin is survived by one son, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
