• Funeral services for Mrs. Justina Martens, 85, widow of John B. Martens, were held Saturday forenoon, Jan. 4, at the Hoffnungsau Church near Inman. Rev. Frank Keller, the pastor, officiated. Mrs. Martens die Dec. 31 at South Hospital in Hutchinson. She was a lifelong resident of the Buhler community. Surviving are three sons, Menno of Hutchinson, Harry of Elkhart, Ind., and John of Pocatello, Ida.; three daughters, Mrs. Irvin R. Schmidt of Buhler, Mrs. Norman Enns of Guymon, Okla., and Mrs. Henry Friesen of Newton; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Justina Ediger Martens was born to Jacob and Katharina (Harder) Ediger on Nov. 13, 1889 in Reno County, Kansas. She was called to meet her Maker on Dec. 31, 1974, reaching the age of 85.

Her childhood days were spent in the Buhler-Inman area where she received a basic education. On June 16, 1907, she was baptized by Rev. Abraham Ratzlaff and remained a faithful member of the Hoffnungsau Church until her death.

On March 30, 1910, she was joined in marriage to John B. Martens. They enjoyed more than 58 years of happiness together. To this union two daughters and three sons were born, all of whom survive. Her husband and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Mother's ever present smile, patience, understanding, and consideration for the family were continuous evidence of her faith and trust in a living God, knowing "all things work together for good to those who love God."

We remember mother as industrious and a hard worker. Besides faithfully carrying out her household duties and caring for the family, she took time to do some extra things which she loved doing such as quilting and sewing. Today each child and grandchild is enjoying a quilt as a remembrance of her labors.

For the last eight years the Sunshine Home at Buhler really did bring her sunshine, even though there were days of despair and disappointment when she felt lonely, discouraged, and a burden. There were always the friendly and loving words of the workers who fed her and took care of her and also the Sunshine Ladies who came in to cheer her and read cards and letters to her.

Those left to mourn her departure are Harry and Olga Martens of Elkhart, Ind., Lydia and Irvin Schmidt of Buhler, Kan., Menno and Lena Martens of Hutchinson, Kan., John and Louise Martens of Pocatello, Idaho, Velma and Norma Enns of Guymon, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Minnie, Mrs. Henry Friesen.

Funeral services were held at the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church on Jan. 4 and burial was made in the church cemetery.
