MRS. AGNES MARTENS HUEBERT

(Mrs.) Agnes Martens was born to Martin and Maria Huebert on March 28, 1891 in Neukirch, South Russia. At the age of 15 she accepted Christ as her Saviour and soon after he was baptized and joined the church.

When she was 20 the Lord opened the doors for her to go to Germany to prepare for missionary service as a nurse. She was accepted for missionary service in India by the Mennonite Brethren churches of Russia. However, just before her final exams in nursing, World War I broke out. The Lord undertook and she found opportunity to serve him as a nurse in Germany.

After the war, in 1918, she returned to Russia, and, since the foreign mission field was now closed, she served for three years as a nurse in the Mennonite colonies. She then married Abram Martens, a widower with three children. One son was born to the couple. In 1926 the Martens moved to Canada, settling finally near Bassano, Alberta. She continued to be on call as a nurse as well as being a helpmate to her husband in his work as a farmer and minister.

After the passing of her husband in 1950 she moved to Coaldale, Alberta and joined the Mennonite Brethren church there. Her last three years were spent in a nursing home in nearby Lethbridge. She passed away on March 8. At the March 11 funeral service in the Coaldale MB Church, pastor Rudy Heidebrecht spoke from 2 Cor. 5: 1-9.

She leaves to mourn two daughters, Katie (Mrs. David) Heidebrecht of Clearbrook, B.C., and Susie (Mrs. David) Goertz of Coaldale; two sons, Abe of Coaldale, and George and his wife, Erna, of Grand Forks, B.C.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
