First Dutch Woman Minister Dies

Kollum, The Netherlands. — Dr. Annie Mankes, 85, the first woman ordained to the ministry of a Protestant church in The Netherlands, died recently at Amersfoort.

Her first pastorate was the Dutch Mennonite church at Boven-Knijpe, which she served from 1911 to 915. From 1921 to 1948 she served as pastor of the Protestantenbond (Dutch Prostesant organization) at Rotterdam.

Mrs. Mankes earned her Ph.D degree in 1918. Her thesis was entitled, "Historico-Materialistic and Socio-Democratic Ethics." Among her various theological and literary writings is her autobiography, "Een vrouw in het wondere ambt" (A Woman in the Strange Profession), which was published in book form in 1956.
