PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT KILLED IN PLANE CRASH
Ramon Magsaysay, strongly anti-Communist president of the Philippines, died in a plane crash on Cebu Island, Sunday, March 17, as he and 25 associates were returning from the Southeast Asia Defense Treaty conference in Australia.
Only meager information was available regarding the crash. The twin-engine plane plowed into a wooded mountain about 10 minutes after it took off from Cebu City in good, moonlit flying weather.
Magsaysay, who won the Philippine presidency in a landslide in 1953, would have been a candidate for re-election at the national election next November. Vice-President Carlos P. Garcia will fill out the unexpired term.
