NEWTON PUBLISHER DIES WEDNESDAY MORNING

Mr. John C. Mack, well known Newton publisher, owner of the Kansan Printing Co., passed away at his home Wednesday morning, Jan. 29 at 8:30 a. m. Mr. Mack had undergone several serious operations for kidney trouble during the past fifteen months and had suffered a relapse a few ays ago. at first it was thought that he would hold his own and the physicians gave him a chance for recover after removing several kidney stones which had poisoned his system, but his weakened constitution could not survive the shock of the operation.

Mr. Mack came to Kansas in 1887 and taught school for several years at Hesston and at Newton. In 1892 he married Mrs. Lizzie Prentis. Later on he became County Superintendent. He also served as postmaster of Newton under Taft. He represented the 65th Kansas district in the state Legislature for several terms and was a member of that body at the time of his death. He also did some excellent work on the State Highway Commission.

Mr. Mack took over the management of the Kansan, the local daily, in 1898 and has ever since been identified with that paper. Through his death Newton loses one of its most active citizens.

The deceased was a member of the Congregational church at the time of his death. He is survived by Mrs. Mack. The Review wished to extend its sympathies to the bereaved.
