Gen. MacArthur, Conqueror Of Japan, Dies in New York

Gen. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander in the Pacific and conqueror of Japan during World War II, died April 5 in New York at the age of 84. He had been critically ill for 13 days.

Funeral services were announced for Saturday, April 11, at Norfolk, Va.

MacArthur was credited with charting the blueprint for Japan's phenomenal post-war recovery and laying the foundation for its present friendly relations with the U. S.

After being relieved from his Korean command by President Truman in 1952, MacArthur became board chairman of Sperry-Rand Corp. at an annual salary of $45,000.
