Death Claims Former India Missionary

Hilllsboro, Kan. — Word was received here that Rev. John H. Lohrenz, 78, Mennonite Brethren missionary to India from 1920 to 1957, died at Fresno, Calif. on March 5. Funeral services were held March 9 in the Butler Avenue M. B. Church there.

Rev. Lohrenz was a missionary statesman who contributed much to the administrative organization of the India mission. He wrote guidelines for the national church, as well as a Bible doctrine in the Telugu language which is still being used. He served as Bible teacher in the Telugu language, and for many years was mission treasurer.

A native of Moundridge, Kan., he was converted at the age of 14 and joined the Ebenfeld M. B. Church near Hillsboro. he graduated from Tabor College in 1918, and in the same year enrolled in Bluffton College and Mennonite Seminary at Bluffton, O. In 1929 he received the B. D. degree from Central Baptist Seminary, Kansas City, Mo.

He was married to Maria Klassen in 1918 and she served with him in India. She died in 1962. In the following year he married Susie Richert, and they served in India on a short-term basis from October 1963 to March 1964.
