MRS. ANNA LOEWEN

Funeral services for Mrs. J. J. Loewen, 74, who died at her home at Winkler, Manitoba, Thursday, December 16, were held in the Bergthaler church on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 1:30 p. m., with Rev. H. S. Friesen officiating. He was assisted by Rev. H. S. Voth and Rev. J. J. Siemens.

Mrs. Loewen, nee Anna Braun, was born in South Russia on January 1, 1875, and came to Canada with her parents that year via Duluth, Moorhead and Emerson, and settled in the Osterwick district south of Morden, Man. There, on November 27, 1894, she married the late John J. Loewen, hardware merchant, who died on May 17, 1932. While she had lived in Winkler for the past 35 years, prior to that the Loewens lived in Altona and in Hague, Sask.

She is survived by two sons, John F. I. and Edwin B. in Winkler; two daughters, Mary J. at home and Mrs. D. Heppner of Lowe Farm; four grandchildren; and two older sisters, Mrs. Peter Buhr, Altona, and Mrs. Jacob Warkentin, Haskett.

Two sons predeceased her. Henry was killed in an aeroplane[sic airplane] crash at Devil's Lake, North Dakota, on November 15, 1931; and Jake died in Winkler on March 20, 1946. Mrs. Loewen suffered a paralytic stroke on October 18 last and was confined to her bed thereafter.

The pall-bearers were her nephews J. G. Brown, J. J. Warkentin, George Brown, John Warkentin, Frank Brown and Peter Brown.

Mrs. Loewen was the mother of Miss Mary J. Loewen, who served with the M.C.C. to Italy. She returned a year ago last spring to take care of her mother.
