Berne Businessman, Active Layman Dies Of Accident Injuries

Berne, Ind. — Injuries suffered in a highway accident last July 2 proved fatal on Aug. 29 to Gordon M. Liechty, 55, Berne businessman and a lay leader in the Central District Mennonite Conference.

A private burial service was held Aug. 30 at the M.R.E. cemetery here, followed by a memorial service Thursday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church, with Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander and Rev. Gerald Stucky officiating.

Mr. Liechty was returning from a trip to Indianapolis when involved in a collision at Muncie, Ind., resulting in fractures of the skull. He died at Adams County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Liechty was one of the owners of Berne Hi-Way Hatchery and also had a large poultry business at his farm. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Mennonite Biblical Seminary and the Board of Missions of the Central District Conference.

He was active in Berne community affairs and in the First Mennonite Church as deacon, Advisory Council member, Sunday school and midweek teacher, as well as in the Men's Chorus and Choral Society.
