Gertruda Kasdorf Lettkeman, was born August 10, 1857, in South Russia. At the age of 24 years gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized in the Lichtnau Church on June 1, 1881, by Elder Jacob Toews. On May 19, 1884 she was married to Peter Lettkeman, and migrated to America in 1892, coming to Goessel, Kansas, where they joined the Alexanderwohl Church, and later at Buhler, Kansas, from where they moved on a homestead near Weatherford, Oklahoma, in 1900, where they joined the Bergtal church near Corn. Here they experience the many hardships of pioneer life. When they retired they moved southeast of Clinton, joining the Herold Church, where they lived until her husband passed away on Nov. 13, 1936 when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. P. P. Sawatzky. After a prolonged series of ailments and sickness, through which the Lord marvelously sustained her, she quietly brethed her last at 10:30 Sunday morning, June 3 aged 89 years, 9 months, and 24 days. She leaves to mourn her departure 2 sons: Jacob Lettkeman, of Weatherford, and Peter Lettkeman, of Clinton, 5 daughters: Mrs. P. P. Sawatzky and Mrs. B. C. Sawatzky of Clinton; Mrs. K. B. Wiebe, Two Buttes, Colorado; Mrs. Gus Wagner, Tucumcari, New Mexico; and Mrs. Mary Giesbrecht, Reedley Califonia; also 2 daughters-in-law, 4 sons-in-law, 45 grandchildren, and 91 great-grandchildren. One daughter, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren have preceded her in death.
“Sleep on, beloved, sleep and take thy rest;
Lay down they [sic thy] head upon thy Savior’s breast;
We love thee well; but Jesus loves thee best. —
Good-night!”
