Traffic Accidents Cause Death, Injury To Amish in Indiana

Goshen, Ind. — Horse-drawn Amish buggies again figured in recent traffic accidents on Indiana highways and roads.

Near Loogootee in Daviess County, sheriff's officers found the body of 19-year-old Vernon Lengacher at a county road T-intersection. They said his buggy apparently had been involved in a collision and he was thrown out and killed.

A semi truck crashed into the rear of a buggy on US-20 west of Lagrange, causing severe head injuries and back burns to eight-year-old Linda Mullet. Her father, Melvin L. Mullet, escaped injury.

Leroy D. Hochstetler, 36, of rural Nappanee rode his bicycle into the path of a semi-tractor tanker on US-6 near there. He was thrown more than 20 feet and sustained rib fractures, a collapsed lung, and shoulder injury.

Southwest of Milford, a horse and buddy were hit by a car at an intersection when the horse became frightened and ran into the path of the oncoming car. Mrs. Earl L. Yoder and daughter Laura, 15, were hospitalized with fractures, while another daughter, Susan, 5, had severe head injuries.
