Indiana Woman Dies At 96

MRS. CATHERINE LEINBACH OF NEW PARIS HAD LIVED IN COUNTY 90 YEARS

Nappanee, Ind. — One of the oldest residents of Elkhart county and also one of the oldest members of the Old Order Mennonite church, Mrs. Catherine Leinbach, passed away on Monday, March 17, at the home of her son, Noah Leinbach, southwest of New Paris. She celebrated her 96th birthday last October, having been born in Putnam county, Ohio, on Oct. 30, 1850.

Mrs. Leinbach and her parents, Christian and Esther Shank Bare, were among the early settlers here, coming to this county in 1857. The towns are at present the largest in the county, Goshen and Elkhart, were at that time in their infancy.

The deceased married Isaac Leinbach in 1874, and he passed away in 1916. Four sons and five daughters survive: Noah of New Paris, Dan of Harrison township, Henry of Tuscon [sic Tucson], Ariz., Jonas of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Leander Blosser of Harrison, Mich., Mrs. Sol Defreese of Temple, Mich., Mrs. Mary Fisher of Elkhart, Mrs. Leander Gerber of Goshen, and Mrs. Noah Welty of Nappanee. In addition she is survived by 58 grandchildren and 120 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services took place on March 27 at the Yellow Creek church, Goshen, with William Ramer, Paul Hoover, and Clarence Shank officiating.
