Christian B. Lehmann, son of Henry and Elizabeth Hirschler Lehmann, was born Sept. 30, 1876 at Deutschof, Germany, and died at the Freeman, S. D. hospital on Nov. 1, 1965 at the age of 89 years, one month, and one day. He was the oldest child in a family of six children, five of whom grew to maturity.

Leaving his home in Germany, he came to the home of C. E. Krehbiel at Halstead, Kan. in 1892. His mother died in Germany, and Christian prepared passage for the rest of the family. In 1898 his father, his sister Elizabeth, and his brothers Henry, John, and Jacob came to this country.

In 1902 father came to South Dakota and was united in marriage with Katie Schowalter on Sept. 11. They settled on a farm west of Hurley, S. D. where they lived for 45 years. Retiring from the farm in January 1948, they moved to their new home in Freeman. After three years of retirement mother passed away on Dec. 27, 1950.

Father was active in church work all his life. He was baptized in Germany on Aug. 23, 1891 by Johannas [''sic'' Johannes] Hirschler. At the age of 16, he began teaching Sunday school, and did so regularly until two years before his death. He served 70 years in this capacity. He was one of the charter members of the Salem Mennonite Church when it was formed in 1908, and was a member of the committee which set up the rules and regulations of the new church. He served as a deacon of the church for a number of years. He spent much time and effort in establishing the Salem Home for the Aged in Freeman.

On Jan. 15, 1952, he was united in marriage with Frances Hahneman, with whom he shared his declining years.

Father was blessed with good health and sturdiness throughout his lifetime. His mental alertness was exceptional for his age. He was well read in the Bible and religious writings, as well as current events.

On Oct. 31, at 5:15 p.m. father suddenly lapsed into a state of unconsciousness from which he never recovered. He departed this life at 10:05 a.m., Nov. 1, 1965.

He is survived by his wife Frances; sons, Albert, Walter, and Henry of Hurley; two daughters, Celia, Mrs. Charley Fliginger of Hurley, and Susanna, Mrs. Reinhardt Preheim of Marion; two sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, 19 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. His first wife Katie; four children, three grandchildren, one sister, and four brothers preceded him in death.

Well-Known Freeman, S. D. Resident Dies

Freeman, S. D. — Funeral services were held at the Salem Mennonite Church near here for Christian B. Lehmann, 89, a charter member of the Salem congregation and long active in church and community work. He died here Nov. 1.

A native of Deutschof, Germany, he came to Halstead, Kan. as a lad in 1892. In 1902 he came to South Dakota and was married here to Katie Schowalter. The couple farmed west of Hurley fpr 45 years. His first wife died in 1950.

Mr. Lehmann taught Sunday school for about 70 years, served as a deacon of the Salem congregation for many years, and helped establish the Salem Home for Aged here.

Survivors include his second wife, the former Frances Hahneman, three sons and two daughters and their families.
