Former Missionary, Relief Worker Dies

Elkhart, Ind. — Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia Lehman, 85, widow of Dr. M. C. Lehman, were held Dec. 18 at the Prairie Street Mennonite Church here. She died Dec. 16 at the home of Mrs. Dora Gehman, where she had been cared for the past several years.

Mrs. Lehman and her husband served as missionaries to India under the Mennonite Board of Missions from 1905 to 1930. After leaving the mission field Dr. Lehman was an instructor of philosophy and psychology at Goshen College. During World War II he was a divisional director of the CPS program, and for a number of years he and Mrs. Lehman served in relief work under the MCC in Europe.

In 1941 while they were in Poland, Mrs. Lehman was instrumental in setting up a clothing collection program under which one million pounds of clothing was collected annually. She traveled extensively in the U. S. and Canada in the interest of this work. She also edited a book used for devotions in the women's auxiliary of the (Old) Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Lehman was the former Lydia Liechty of Sterling, Ohio. Her husband preceded her in death in 1963, and a son, Dr. Waldo J. Lehman, in 1960. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert L. Bender of Elkhart and Mrs. Edwin I. Weaver, missionary of Accra, Ghana; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
