Berne, Ind. — Glen W. Lehman, 16, of rural Berne and a Negro youth from Gulfport, MIss. drowned while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico on June 24.
The Lehman youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lehman, had gone to Mississippi to take part in a three-week voluntary work camp at the Methodist Assembly Church grounds, Waveland, Miss., sponsored by the General Conference Mennonite Church. The name of the Negro youth was not learned here.
Glen and his companion apparently were pulled into deep water by a sudden undertow. Glen's body was recovered at 12:30 p.m. the following day. The body of his companion still was missing at latest report.
Funeral services for the Lehman youth were held on June 28 at the First Mennonite church of Berne, of which he was a member. Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander officiated.
Other members of the work camp group included Ann Sprunger of Berne, Susan Dick of Woodburn, and Becky Yoder of Fort Wayne.
Dennis Lehman, the youth's father, served one year in voluntary service at Gulfport.
