Berne, Ind., July 10 — David C. Lehman, 76, prominent retired farmer and carpenter living on Center street in Berne, died suddenly at 8:05 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of his son, David D. Lehman. Death resulted from a heart stroke which Mr. Lehman suffered while sitting on the bed in his bedroom. He fell across the bed on his back and died instantly.
Mr. Lehman's death came as a great shock. He had been up and around all the time and appeared to be in good spirits. Since April he had been suffering form [sic] a weak heart but had been in fairly good condition during the past several weeks. Mrs. D. D. Lehman was at the bedside when Mr. Lehman died.
Mr. Lehman was born on the farm now owned by Carl Lehman on the northeast edge of town, on October 25, 1853, a son of Christian C. and Anna Sprunger Lehman. On September 2, 1876, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Liechty. For about 51 years the couple lived on a farm two miles northeast of Berne, where on October 4, 1927, Mrs. Lehman died. On April 28, 1928, Mr. Lehman moved to Berne, where he had since that time resided with his son D. D. Lehman and family. The deceased was one of the most prominent farmers in this community for many years and had a large number of friends.
Surviving the deceased are the following children: Calvin Lehman, Geneva; Mrs. Wilhelm (Salome) Von Gunten of Ft. Wayne; Rufus Lehman of Ft. Wayne; Mrs. Walter (Ada) Stucky, Mrs. Harve (Elda) Moser, Mrs. E. W. (Bertha) Baumgartner, mrs. D. D. (Ida) Stauffer, Mrs. Menno (Lydia) Habegger, Mrs. Tilman (Elma) Steiner, D. D. Lehman, all of Berne; Mrs. Elmer (Rhodelia) Behling of Ft. Wayne.
Three children, Alma, Otto and Lorendo died in infancy.
Two brothers and one sister survive, John and Peter Lehman and Mrs. Elias Hirschy, all of Berne. Four sisters have preceded Mr. Lehman in death, Mrs. Jerry Luginbill, Mrs. Philip Sprunger and Mrs. David Luginbill.
The last rites for Mr. Lehman will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the D. D. Lehman home and at 2 o'clock in the Mennonite church. Burial in the M. R. E. Cemetery.
