Mrs. Bertha Ledig of Upland, Calif, passed away at the San Antonio hospital on Friday, Sept. 3, at the age of 80 years.

She had been in failing health for the past two years and had spent almost a year in the Upland Nursing home. However, she had improved, had returned to her home several months ago and had been able to attend church services and also the women’s missionary activities.

Although very frail, her homegoing came somewhat unexpectedly. Friday afternoon she became very ill. Friends and neighbours[sic] came to lend a helping hand. When her suffering would not be relieved her physician took her to the hospital. She died in her sleep that night.

A very busy life has come to a close. For many years she took care of the sick people in their homes and many will remember her for her kindness. She was loyal to her church and as long as her strength and health permitted she was very active in the missionary society. She was a charter member of the First Mennonite church of Upland and also of the missionary society, having been a member of both organizations for nearly 51 years.

Mrs. Ledig with her family came to Upland from Summerfield, Ill. and lived on a ranch north of town. In later years she moved to Upland. Her husband, Henry Ledig, died in 1912 and her two daughters succumbed to tuberculosis after they had grown to young womanhood. Surviving her are two sons, Wesley and family of Banning, Calif, and Al of the home, also a brother Oscar Ruth, Greary [sic Geary], Okla.

In the absence of the pastor, Rev. Alvin Burkholder of the Brethren in Christ church conducted the funeral services. The many floral offerings gave evidence of the high esteem in which the departed was held. Rev. Burkholder also officiated at the committal services at the Bellvue cemetery where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband.
