Well Known Upland Resident Killed in Crossing Accident

L. M. LEDIG DIED INSTANTLY IN COLLISION WITH TRAIN AT RAILROAD CROSSING

Ontario, Calif. — L. M. Ledig, 81, 407 North First avenue, Upland, widely-known retired citrus rancher, was instantly killed at 3:01 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 26, when his motor car, northbound on Grove avenue was struck at the Santa Fe crossing by the westbound Fast Mail Express.

The accident was witnessed by James Lee Kelly of Los Angeles, who was standing near by, and by P. Ybarra and his daughter, Victoria, 1356 Bowen street, Upland, who said the elderly man apparently failed to note approach of the train, doing an estimated 65 miles an hour, and drove directly into its path.

The impact hurled the sedan to a point 108 feet west of the right of way. One tire traveled an additional 92 ft.

Mr. Ledig suffered multiple injuries, including a broken neck. The body was thrown from the machine 93 feet west of the point of impact.

The rancher, who had resided in this community for the last 48 years and who was a member of the Upland Mennonite church, is survived by a son, Harry, of Alta Loma, who is reported seriously inn in a Los Angeles hospital; a sister-in-law, Mrs. S. S. Haury, Newton, Kansas; two grandchildren, Constance and Harry Ledig Jr., Alta Loma, and two brothers, Adolph J. Ledig, Upland, and August H. Ledig, Alta Loma.

The train was in charge of Conductor E. A. Carroll of Needles and Engineer H. M Miller of Huntington Park. W. G. Root of Los Angeles was the fireman. The tragedy was investigated by Deputy Coroner P. H. Evans and Coroner R. E. Williams announced today there would be no inquest.

Funeral services for the pioneer rancher were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2:30 p. m., at the Upland Mennonite church with the Stone mortuary in charge of arrangements. The Rev. Earl Saltzman [sic Salzman], pastor, officited {sic]. Interment was in Bellevue cemetery. — The Daily Report.

A LARGE FUNERAL

Upland, Calif. — A large crowd of relatives and friends gathered at the Mennonite church here Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 28, for the funeral of the aged L. M Ledig who was instantly killed in an auto-train accident on Sunday, Sept. 26. the service was in charge of Rev. Earl Salzman, local pastor. A double mixes quartet sang "Still, Still With Thee" and Sunset and Evening Star".

Pall bearers were Oswald Hirschler, A. K. Toews, W. F. Dettweiler, Robert Adler, Calvin Niswander and Tressler Boshart.
