Hospital Attendant Drowns In River

WAS MEMBER OF I-W UNIT AT BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT RETREAT

Brattleboro, Vermont. — The I-W unit at the Brattleboro Retreat (mental hospital) was saddened recently by the sudden death of Clyde S. Landis, an attendant at the Retreat who died while swimming on Saturday afternoon, June 26. He had been a member of the unit since July 1, 1953.

The 21-year-old youth was the son of Robert and Kathryn (Shenk) Landis of Route 3, Lancaster, Pa. Funeral services were held June 30 at the Millersville, Pa. Mennonite church, Bro. Maurice Landis in charge. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

The young man and three companions were swimming from a boat in the West River at the time of the tragedy. Landis, a rather poor swimmer, apparently became exhausted in ten feet of water and by the time the others rescued him, it was too late. They managed to take him to shore, but efforts to revive him proved fruitless.

In addition to his parents, Clyde is survived by a brother, Harold, and two sisters, Nancy and Roberta; his grandparents, David Shenks and Edwin Landis of Lancaster. He had planned to be married in the fall.
