Lancaster, Pa.— Ira D. Landis, 78, well-known historian of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, died Sunday morning, Feb. 27, at Lancaster General Hospital following a four-week illness.
Specializing in the history of Mennonite churches and settlements in this eastern Pennsylvania region. Landis was the founder of the Lancaster Conference Historical Society and served as its historian. At the time of his death he was president of the Community Historians.
He was past president of the Pennsylvania German Society, had been active in the Eastern Mennonite Associated Libraries and Archives, and was a member of the Historical and Research Committee of the Mennonite General Conference and of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions.
He was a member of the Landis Valley Mennonite Church, where he was ordained to the ministry in 1921. He also served as a minister of the Millport Mennonite Church from 1953 until his death. The family home is on Route 1, Leola.
Surviving are his widow, the former Mabel Book; four children, J. Dale and Mrs. Jacob (Rachel) Stahl, both of Lititz, Lois of Calico Rock, Ark. and Faith, at home; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
