Lancaster Couple Die in Crash

Lancaster, Pa. — A Lancaster County couple en route home from a Bible conference near Chambersburg, Pa. were killed in a two-car collision near Manheim on Friday evening, Aug. 10.

Martin Landis, 75, and his wife, Emma Jean Landis, 74, of Millport Road, Lancaster, died when thrown from their car in a head-on crash. It had rained all day Friday, and Mr. Landis lost control of his car on a curve, hitting a car coming from the opposite direction.

A passenger, Mrs. Anna Fuss of Lancaster, was injured but is reported in satisfactory condition in a hospital. The driver of the other car also is in the hospital.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Landis were natives of this area. Mr. Landis was a farmer until his son, Martin, Jr. took over the farm. At the time of his death he was employed in the parts department at Landis Brothers Farm Implements, Inc., owned by his brother.

An estimated 2,000 persons attended the viewing on Sunday evening at Gundel Funeral Home here. The funeral services, held Monday at Mellinger's Mennonite Church, also were largely attended. Both Mr. and Mrs. Landis were long-time members of the church. Bishop Paul Landis, Rev. Harry Lefever and Rev. Nelson Landis, a nephew, officiated.
