DANIEL J. LAIS

Daniel J., son of John and Susannah (Plank) Lais, was born July 28, 1884, on a farm three miles east of Hubbard, Oregon. He spent his entire life in this community. On August 25, 1958, he was fatally injured in a highway accident south of Hubbard.

He accepted Christ at the age of 32 years and joined the fellowship of the Zion Mennonite Church

On Dec. 20, 1906, he was married to Ellen Egli who passed away Oct. 22, 1955. One daughter, Celesta, one brother and one sister also preceded him in death.

Surviving him are 11 daughters and two sons: John of Junction City, Frank of Hubbard, Mrs. Harold (Orpha) Fisher of Molalla, Mrs. Allen (Lena) Blair of Portland, Miss Mary Lais, Mrs. Kenneth (Lily) Berkey, Mrs. Vernon (Dorothy) Gingerich, Mrs. Raymond (Susan) Stanerson and Mrs. John (Vera) Garber, all of the Hubbard vicinity, Mrs. Martin (Frances) Hoover of Los Angeles, Mrs. John (Ruth) Zehr of Goshen, Ind., Mrs. Ezra (Marjorie) Birky and Mrs. Paul (Evelyn) Birky of Kalispell, Montana. All 14 children accepted Christ at an early age in the old Zion church.

He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Shank of Twin Rocks, Oregon and Mrs. Laura Kahle of Hubbard; a brother, A. J. Lais of Molalla; 54 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 30 in the Zion Mennonite Church, with Bishop C. I. Kropf, Edward Kenagy and John Lederach officiating. Interment was made in the Zion Mennonite Cemetery.
