AMOS T. KULP

Amos Timothy Kulp was born in Philadelphia on May 6, 1903, to Isaac and Lizzie (Bergey) Kulp. He died at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta, Colo., on Feb 14, 1998. In 1907 the family moved to Cheraw, Colo. In 1910 they moved back to Pennsylvania for a year to see about selling their butcher shop in Philadelphia. After the store was sold they moved back to Colorado.

Amos attended three years of high school in La Junta and graduated from Hesston (Kan.) Academy. M.C. Vogt said, "Because of Amos' extensive reading, he has equivalent of a college education." Amos loved to read and was especially interested in health and home remedies.

In 1929 Amos attended Coin Electrical School in Chicago. Then he moved to Canada and worked for a farmer. From Canada he went to Doylestown, Pa., and worked in a wood shop. When jobs were scarce in Pennsylvania, he came back home to farm for his father.

Amos did repair work on items such as radios and clocks. He usually charged $1. He made a radio receiver from a crystal; it was the second radio in the area. The neighbors came over to listen to the voice in the box. Amos had a good sense of humor. He always had a good story to tell. He loved music and had a nice bass voice. He played his guitar and sang in Holbrook's men's quartet. They sang over the radio for a number of years.

Amos was a member of East Holbrook Mennonite Church at Cheraw, where he took care of the graveyard for many years. He bought his Cheraw farm from his uncle, Timothy Thut, in 1938. He made his home a wonderful place for his parents, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends.

He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Kulp. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Kulp and Esther Vogt; and two infant brothers.
