Accidents Claim Three Lives in Steinbach Area

HIGHWAY COLLISION, TWO DROWNINGS CLAIM VICTIMS OVER WEEK-END

Steinbach, Manitoba.— One death resulting from an auto collision and two drownings occurred in this area between August 21 and 24.

Mrs. Henry Gerbrand, about 50 years of age and partially crippled, lost her life when the car in which she was a passenger was struck and overturned by another car coming from the opposite direction. It is believed a heart attack caused her death.

David, 16-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kroeker, drowned Thursday afternoon when he stumbled into a shallow ditch containing about six inches of water. The Kroekers came from Germany only recently and are employed by the Plett brothers four miles west of Steinbach. Funeral services for the child were held Sunday at the Mennonite church on Hanover street.

The second person to drown was John C. Enns, 24, of Vancouver, British Columbia, who was visiting friends at Niverville. He lost his life while swimming Saturday evening in the Red River near St. Agathe. With him were his cousins, Henry and Peter Isaac of Niverville.

The body was recovered at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and taken to Loewen’s funeral chapel, Steinbach.

It will be sent to Vancouver for burial.

Unmarried, Mr. Enns is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Enns of Yarrow, B. C.
