Pioneer Businessman Dies at Reedley

Reedley, Calif. — Funeral services for Daniel C. Krehbiel, 95, pioneer businessman here and long a community leader, were conducted Sept. 2 at the First Mennonite Church. He died Aug. 30 at Kingsburg.

A native of Summerfield, ll., [sic.] Mr. Krehbiel moved his retail mercantile business from St. Louis Mo. to Reedley in 1908. A few years later he was named cashier of the First National Bank here. Later he devoted his time to ranching interests, and served for many years on the advisory board of the Bank of America, Reedley Branch.

He served as a member of the Raisin Control Board, on the board of Reedley High School and College, member and chairman of the board of Reedley Hospital, which he helped organize, and long-time board member of Kings View Hospital, serving on the building committee.

He also helped organize the Mennonite Aid Plan of the Pacific District and served on the board, and held places of leadership at the First Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, four grandchildren, and one sister, Clara S. Krehbiel of Reedley.

DANIEL CHRISTIAN KREHBIEL

Daniel Christian Krehbiel, son of Rev. Jacob E. and Katherine Ruth Krehbiel, was born March 14, 1871 in Summerfield, Ill. He attended public school in Summerfield, McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill. and the Mennonite Academy in Halstead, Kan.

In his early teens he was baptized on confession of faith by his father and admitted to membership in the Mennonite Church of Summerfield, Ill.

June 12, 1907 he was united in marriage with Clara Leah Krehbiel of Clarence Center, N. Y. The new home was established in St. Louis, Mo. where he was engaged in the retail mercantile business. In the fall of 1908, the business was moved to Reedley, Cal.

In 1911 he was called to be cashier of the First National Bank of Reedley. After serving for some years, he resigned the position and occupied his time with his ranch interests. Later he was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Bank of America, Reedley Branch, and in 1954 he received the jeweled pin for 25 years of service.

He served as advisor for the Sun Maid Raisin Growers of the Reedley area, and later was a member of the Raisin Control Board. He served on the Board of Trustees of Reedley High School and College when the first college building was erected. He assisted in organizing the Mennonite Aid Plan of the Pacific District and served on the Board of Directors.

He gave much time in helping to organize and build the Reedley Hospital and was chairman of the Board of Directors from 1937 to 1944 and a member of the Board until 1957.

When the Mennonite Central Committee built Kings View Homes, he served on the building committee and was a member of the Board of Directors until 1955.

He was active in all phases of work in the First Mennonite Church of Reedley. He served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and president of Christian Endeavor.

He leaves to honor his memory his wife Clara Leah Krehbiel; two daughters, Lucile Naffziger of Visalia, Cal. and Winifred Warkentin of Fresno, Cal.; four grandchildren, Arthur and Kenneth Naffziger and William and Nancy Warkentin; and one sister, Clara S. Krehbiel of Reedley
