Aged Resident Dies At Pretty Prairie

Pretty Prairie, Kan. — Peter J. Krehbiel, a resident of this community for 75 years, died at his home in Pretty Prairie on March 7, reaching the age of 83. He had been ill for two years.

He was a member of the First Mennonite Church near here, where the funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon. Dr. H. G. Nyce, Rev. P. P. Tschetter and Rev. Wm. Gering officiated.

Mr. Krehbiel was a native of South Dakota. He leaves his wife, Rosa; seven sons, two daughters, 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

PETER J. KREHBIEL

Peter J. Krehbiel, eldest son of Jacob and Freni (Graber) Krehbiel, was born Feb. 22, 1875, at Yankton, South Dakota. At the age of nine years he came to Kansas with his parents. They settled near Pretty Prairie and in this community he resided the rest of his life.

Upon his confession of faith he was baptized by the late Rev. Christian Kaufman on April 8, 1891, and became a member of the First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie, where he remained a faithful member until death.

When he was 19 his father preceded him in death. Being the oldest son, this left many responsibilities for him.

On Nov. 23, 1897, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Graber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Graber. This union was blessed with four children of whom one died in infancy. On April 29, 1904, his wife Elizabeth passed on to her reward, leaving him with three small children. They were permitted to share life's joys and sorrows for seven short years.

On June 6, 1905, he was united in holy wedlock with Rosa Graber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete D, Graber. this union was shared for 52 years and eight months. Ten children were born of whom three died in infancy. One son Clarence preceded him in death at the age of 24.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife Rosa; eight sons and one daughter, John, Irvan, Herman, Harvey, Fred, Elmer and Joe, all of Pretty Prairie, Edwin of Provo, Utah, and Edna of Kingman, Kan; eight daughters-in-law, 29 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Peter B. Kopper, Mrs. Henry C. Graber, and Mrs. John C. Graber, all of Pretty Prairie; one brother, Joe P. Krehbiel of Kingman; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Jonas O. Krehbiel and Mrs John J. Krehbiel of Pretty Prairie, and a host of relatives and friends.

He enjoyed good health all his life, never having been hospitalized. Approximately four years ago he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Since the beginning of the year he had gradually failed in health until he quietly and peacefully passed away Friday noon, March 7, 1958, attaining the age of 83 years and 13 days.

Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie on March 9, with Dr. H. G. Nyce, Rev. P. P. Tschetter and Rev. Wm. m. Gering officiating.
