Soviet Cosmonaut Dies in Space Descent

A space accident last week claimed the life of Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, who died when the parachutes on his Soyuz I spacecraft apparently failed to function during descent after a flight of nearly two days.

The Soyuz I was a powerful new carrier rocket and its speed of 18,641 miles per hour was the highest attained to date by any American or Russian spacecraft.'

Several days earlier the United States launched another moonship Surveyor 3, equipped with a tiny shovel to scoop moon dust, and a television system.

Pictures of the soil scooped up by the shovel were sent back to earth. Scientists called it "a very gratifying event."
